OUR box for the birds STORY

So, how did a ‘simple’ family weekend project
turn into this company?

Michael had been wanting to make something with Bianca, our six year old, in his studio for months. He’s an artist and designer. Somehow it just never happened. Finally, I suggested “How about a birdhouse?”  I imagined they’d get a good half day of fun together and we’d have a birdhouse for the spring. Well, a week later, Michael emerged with a completed computer design ready for prototyping. He set to work on the CNC router cutting the pieces, then Bianca and I got in on the fun.  He had designed a puzzle. All the pieces slid together neatly without nails, without glue, without any hassle. Hence our slogan “no nails, no glue, it’s a snap!” We put ours up and, no kidding, within thirty minutes a mama bird was building a nest. We got to know that little family over the next few months.

Then coincidentally Bianca’s Montessori school’s auction theme was birdhouses, so we used the same design but in a polished aluminum mirror finish. Everyone loved it, loved the wood version and wanted one. Next a friend here in Athens, who has the coolest store in town Helix, asked to sell them for the holidays. Naturally we had to figure out some packaging. It was important to us to be environmentally low impact. Once we had that completed we realized we wanted to share it with more folks and make new products too.
